The Story Behind the Print: Urban Renewal
I've spent many years on Dihua Street.
Some vanished scenes still linger vividly in my memory — like the original food court on the 4th floor of Yongle Market, which now only lives on in the film Lucy.
Even the newly rebuilt Baroque-style buildings are slowly adorned with modern acrylic signs, while older structures are continuously demolished for urban redevelopment.
Dihua Street, behind its red-brick facade, is in fact a world of concrete. What we perceive as "tradition" has long been overlaid — and erased — by cement, so seamlessly that we hardly notice.
The cross-shaped pattern of this print resembles a map, symbolizing both the old homes demolished during redevelopment and the steel structures rising swiftly in their place.
All around are one-story homes being torn down.
Our once-clear view of Guanyin Mountain is now interrupted by boxy steel frames, sprouting vertically from the ground like new monuments — a constant reminder of the city’s ever-changing face.
Sometimes, this grid reminds me of a map.
Even after all these years, I still find myself lost inside Yongle Market, unable to find the exit.
When I reflect on what Dihua Street means to me, I feel like a passerby answering a job posting — or like an old apartment waiting to be demolished.
Decades of memories are erased without a trace, only to be replaced by new steel and concrete, ready to begin another story.
Important Notes:
JianJian's fabric patterns are inspired by real urban landscapes across Taiwan —
often scenes we tend to overlook, like the aligned sheets of tin roofs or the way rain stains the corners of aging walls.
Each item is cut from a continuously repeating printed fabric, so the print placement on every product will be unique — no two are the same.
