Pattern Story
I’ve been in Dihua Street for many years now, and some vanished scenes still linger in my memory—
like the old-style food court on the fourth floor of Yongle Market, now only visible in the movie Lucy.
Even the newly reconstructed Western-style buildings slowly sprout modern acrylic signage, while the old cityscape continues to be torn down and redeveloped.
Dihua Street may look like a street of red brick, but underneath, it’s a world of concrete. What we perceive as “tradition” has long been covered up, unnoticed.
The cross-like grid structure in the pattern resembles a map—it also symbolizes the old buildings demolished in the name of renewal, replaced by steel frames pulled from the earth.
So many one-story homes are being demolished, and our view of Guanyin Mountain is gradually replaced by these square steel skeletons.
The whole city feels like it’s in constant transformation.
Sometimes this checkerboard pattern feels just like a map.
Even after all these years, I still get lost wandering around Yongle Market.
When I take a moment to reflect on my own version of Dihua Street,
I feel like a passerby in a help-wanted ad—or like a soon-to-be-demolished apartment,
where decades of human memories vanish without a trace, only to be recorded again by steel and concrete in a new story.
Important Note
Every Jianjian fabric design draws inspiration from overlooked scenes in Taiwanese urban life—
like the alignment of tin-roof houses or the weathered corners of buildings stained by rain.
All of our products are cut from a single, infinitely repeating pattern,
so the pattern layout will vary for each item—each one is truly one of a kind.
