Jian Jian Tote Bag – A Canvas for Urban Stories
The Jian Jian Tote Bag is a piece that showcases the beauty of fabric patterns on a large scale, while maintaining both practicality and versatility. Designed for daily use, the classic tote bag can be carried by hand or worn over the shoulder.
Our fabric designs draw inspiration from Taiwan’s urban landscapes—scenes often overlooked, such as the geometric lines of corrugated metal roofs or the weathered textures of rain-stained walls.
Urban Renewal | The Story Behind the Pattern
Is renewal a form of progress or a sign of decline?
When introducing the stories behind our city-inspired designs, customers often ask:
"Is there a fabric pattern that represents Dihua Street?"
What comes to my mind isn’t the red brick walls or the shops selling dried goods—but rather the narrow arcades crowded with food stalls, the aromatic stacks of traditional Chinese medicine, and the luxury sedans parked outside ground-floor storefronts.
I've spent years here, yet some vanished sights still linger in my memory—like the original historic food court on the fourth floor of Yongle Market, now only visible in the film Lucy.
Even as new Western-style buildings are constructed, acrylic signs begin to appear, and old structures are constantly demolished in the name of urban renewal. Dihua Street, behind its red brick façade, is a world of concrete—the traditions we cherish have long been concealed beneath layers of cement, seamlessly blending into the cityscape.
Decoding the Fabric Pattern
Every element within this fabric design reflects my experiences in this evolving city.
The cross-shaped structures resemble a map while also symbolizing the demolition of old buildings—where historic homes are swiftly replaced by towering steel frameworks.
As single-story houses disappear, the once-open view of Guanyin Mountain is gradually obstructed by a grid of rising T-shaped steel structures, altering the entire skyline.
The checkerboard layout reminds me of navigating Yongle Market, where—despite my familiarity with the place—I still find myself losing my way.
Important Note
Each Jian Jian fabric product is cut from a continuous pattern, meaning every tote bag has a unique print layout, making each piece one of a kind.
