Double Gauze Tea Towel / Block Green
I remember my first time taking the high-speed rail many years ago. As the train sliced through the Chianan Plain like a blade, I felt as if I were floating above a vast patchwork of vibrant colors, completely captivated by the rectangular blocks stretching beyond the horizon. It was the most expansive and diverse display of colors I had ever seen—like an enormous swatch book of neatly cut-out color samples. The rice fields, varying in hue depending on the season and crop variety, formed an orderly yet stunningly beautiful mosaic, completely shattering my simplistic impression that fields were supposed to be just "green."
Some time ago, I came across an aerial photograph online—an immense velvet-like carpet divided into sections by organic white veins. What seemed like a single shade of green was actually composed of hundreds of different gradients, appearing both vast and intricate in a delicate way. After looking it up, I realized it was Chishang. Upon visiting in person, I discovered that the aerial perspective and the physical experience were entirely different. Standing within this boundless carpet, I had a strange thought—I felt like I was "almost" in a rice field, even though I was undoubtedly standing in one. Perhaps it was due to my limited exposure to vast landscapes in real life, or maybe my sense of "vastness" had always been confined to the ocean or the view from an airplane.
Cycling slowly through this scenery brought an almost surreal sensation, as if I were moving through an enormous man-made masterpiece (which, in many ways, it truly is). The valley, enclosed by mountains, exuded a powerful sense of sanctity—like a grand and expansive temple of grain, a sacred cradle of nourishment. Chishang is a plain nestled between the Coastal and Central Mountain Ranges, with the railway cutting through the lowest point between the two. Gazing outward from the train, the layers of rice fields resembled ripples left behind by retreating waves on a shallow shore—slow, gentle, and ever so quietly approaching.
