圓形是一個能包容所有事物的空間，但它特別不好畫。以前看老師在黑板上畫圓，甚至需要用手肘當作圓心，才能畫出一個接近圓形的形狀。我想畫出這些存在於擁擠城市之中的圓形，它們與人的密度關係一樣，凌亂、有機而擁擠。

People in Taiwan have a profound affinity for circles. Sometimes as I walk, I look down at the manhole covers on the ground, then look up at the air conditioning units on the buildings, the large round tables in Chinese restaurants, or the coins in my pocket. It seems as though the circle is the only vessel capable of containing all things.

街の中の円

台湾の人は、とりわけ「円（まる）」という形を好みます。道を歩きながらふと足元の人孔蓋（マンホールの蓋）を眺め、見上げればビルの外壁に並ぶ室外機、あるいは中華料理店の大きな円卓や、ポケットから取り出した小銭。あらゆる物事を包み込める器は、円という形をおいて他にないように思えるのです。

도시 속의 원

대만 사람들은 유독 원형을 좋아합니다. 길을 걷다 보면 발밑의 맨홀 뚜껑을 내려다보기도 하고, 고개를 들어 건물 외벽의 실외기를 바라보기도 합니다. 중식당의 커다란 원형 테이블이나 주머니에서 꺼낸 동전들까지, 마치 원형이야말로 세상 모든 것을 담아낼 수 있는 그릇인 것만 같습니다.
